How It Felt
In which John makes a video for future John, future Hank, and future Katherine about what happened at the 2012 Tour de Nerdfighting and how it felt. Thanks to everyone who came out for the tour this year, to all the awesome independent bookstores and theaters that hosted us, and to the nice nerdfighter who held the camera.
Reblogging this moments after finishing the last event of the Tour de Nerdfighting. I am so excited to go home to my family, but I will miss Hank and Katherine and Elyse and Juli and the TFiOS van so much, and I want to thank everyone for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. If I said I’ll remember it forever, Hazel would point out that forever is an incorrect concept. But I hope to be able to remember it for a long time.
Fixed it.
Give this ALL THE NOTES please.

Look how your children grow up. Taught from their earliest infancy to curb their love natures — restrained at every turn! Your blasting lies would even blacken a child’s kiss. Little girls must not be tomboyish, must not go barefoot, must not climb trees, must not learn to swim, must not do anything they desire to do which Madame Grundy has decreed “improper.” Little boys are laughed at as effeminate, silly girl-boys if they want to make patchwork or play with a doll. Then when they grow up, “Oh! Men don’t care for home or children as women do!” Why should they, when the deliberate effort of your life has been to crush that nature out of them. “Women can’t rough it like men.” Train any animal, or any plant, as you train your girls, and it won’t be able to rough it either.

Voltairine de Cleyre (via petitefeministe)
The best part of this essay is when she advocates for children to be brought up with no gender-role stereotyping, and gets in some not-so-subtle digs at heterocentricism and heterosexism in the process.
Did I mention this was written over a hundred years ago? Because it totally was.

Santorum Thinks Imprisoned Dads Better Than Gay Parents
This is insane. So, having one parent absent because they are incarcerated, is better than having two loving parents (who may be of the same gender?) Ridiculous.

THE HOLOCAUST WAS NOT THE FIRST GENOCIDE OF THE 20TH CENTURY.
The HERERO & NAMAQUA GENOCIDE took place between 1904 and 1907 in German colonized South Africa or known as modern day Namibia.
On January 12, 1904 The Herero people lead by Samuel Maharero rebelled against German colonial rule. In August of that year German general Lothar Von Trotha defeated the Herero resistance and drove them into the desert where most of them perished. In October the Nama rebelled but suffered the same fate.
The genocide was characterized by widespread death by starvation and thirst because the Herero who fled the violence were prevented from returning from the Namib Desert. Some sources also claim that the German colonial army systematically poisoned desert wells.
Survivors, majority of whom were women and children, were eventually put in concentration camps, where the German authorities forced them to work as slave labor for German military and settlers, all prisoners were categorized into groups fit and unfit for work, and pre-printed death certificates indicating “death by exhaustion following privation” were issued. The death rates are calculated at between 69 and 74%; in total, from 24,000 up to 100,000 Herero and 10,000 Nama died.
General Trotha stated this about the genocide “I believe that the nation as such should be annihilated, or, if this was not possible by tactical measures, have to be expelled from the country…This will be possible if the water-holes from Grootfontein to Gobabis are occupied. The constant movement of our troops will enable us to find the small groups of nation who have moved backwards and destroy them gradually.”

Folks, I’ve been staring at this for hours and I cannot for the life of me figure out if it’s a joke or not. I need someone with a double Ph.D. in Satire and Sarcasm to evaluate this for me. I don’t want to go to the OP’s blog and find out. I want to figure it out on my own. Because… the picture is kind of funny. A flying pregnant lady grasping mutilated nuts. And the O’s are sperm. That’s funny. Ish. That could be satire. And no one talks about how the precious babbieez could become lawyers, right? “That child could have one day prepared briefs for a city attorney!” Jokes, right?
OK, people, WITHOUT checking the OP’s blog, do you think this is this satire or real life??? Pro-lifers are so rabidly earnest that my brain is broken now.
You have got to be kidding me.

BLACK WALL STREET is not a record label started by The Game.
Black Wall Street was the most prosperous black community in America during the 1920’s located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was known as “Little Africa” or “Black Beverly Hills”, a prime example of racial nationalism. To put into perspective of how money flowed in Black Wall Street, a dollar took 365 DAYS to leave the community, now a dollar leaves an African American Community every 15 MINUTES. The community had hundreds of businesses all negro owned and their motto was “To educate every child”.
June 1, 1921 white supremacists bombed BLACK WALL STREET and killed over 300 people and destroyed over 600 businesses. 21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 grocery stores, a hospital, bank, post office, and most schools were destroyed. The dead were buried in unmarked graves. It wasn’t till 1997 that Oklahoma decided to pass the “1921 Race Riot Reconciliation Act” which provided decedents of that area a free college education.
